Getting to Victoria Without a Car

You do not need a car for a Victoria day trip, but the connections at both ends are the whole problem. The routes that work and the ones that strand you.

Updated August 2026

You do not need a car, and walking on as a foot passenger is cheaper than taking a vehicle across. The difficulty is never the sailing. It is the 36 km at the Vancouver end and the 32 km at the Victoria end.

The options, honestly ranked

1. A through-coach that drives onto the ferry. The simplest thing that works: you are collected in downtown Vancouver, the coach boards the ferry with you on it, and you are dropped in Victoria. No terminal transfers, no separate ferry ticket, no connection to miss. This is what most packaged day trips are.

2. Transit to Tsawwassen, walk on, transit at the far end. Cheapest, and entirely viable if you have checked the specific connections for your date. The risk is at the Victoria end, where onward buses are not frequent and the route serving the ferry terminal does not run at every hour of the day.

3. Seaplane. Removes the problem completely by landing you downtown. Costs two to three times as much and is weather-dependent.

4. Walk on, then taxi or rideshare. Works, and quietly expensive: the run from Swartz Bay into Victoria is around 32 km.

The specific trap

If The Butchart Gardens are on your plan, note that BC Transit route 81 runs from Swartz Bay directly to the gardens in about 50 minutes — roughly every four hours. That frequency is the whole story. Line it up with your sailing and it is an excellent, cheap connection. Miss it and you are at a ferry terminal with very little around it for a long time.

From downtown Victoria, route 75 covers the same ground in 50 minutes to an hour and runs much more often, which is why the backtracking version of this day is more forgiving even though it is longer.

The rule of thumb

Without a car, the value of a packaged trip is not the guiding. It is that both road legs and the return deadline stop being yours to solve.
