How Long the Vancouver to Victoria Day Trip Really Takes

The sailing is 1h35m. The door-to-door journey is closer to four hours each way, because the terminals sit 36 km and 32 km from the two downtowns. The full arithmetic.

Updated August 2026

The number you will see everywhere is 1 hour 35 minutes. That is the sailing time between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay, and it is correct. It is also the smallest part of the journey.

The arithmetic nobody writes down

LegDistance / time
Downtown Vancouver → Tsawwassen terminalabout 36 km
Boarding window before the sailingarrive well ahead; foot passengers and vehicles differ
The sailing, Tsawwassen → Swartz Bay1 hour 35 minutes
Swartz Bay → downtown Victoriaabout 32 km
Total, one wayroughly 4 hours

Double it for a same-day return and you are at about eight hours of transit around whatever time you spend in Victoria. A thirteen-hour packaged day trip is not padding — that is what the geography costs.

Why the terminals are so far out

Neither terminal is a city dock. Tsawwassen sits at the end of a causeway south of the city near the US border; Swartz Bay is at the northern tip of the Saanich Peninsula. Both were sited for the crossing, not for the traveller, and the Saanich Peninsula is why Victoria’s terminal is half an hour from Victoria.

This is also why The Butchart Gardens appear on nearly every itinerary: at about 20 km from Swartz Bay, they are on the way in, while downtown Victoria is another 20-odd kilometres further south.

The seaplane version

The 35-minute flight from Coal Harbour to Victoria’s Inner Harbour is not faster because the aircraft is quick — it is faster because it removes both road legs and both terminals. Downtown to downtown, under an hour including check-in. That is the entire product, and it is why it costs two to three times the fare.

What this means for planning

  • Same-day return by ferry: expect a long day. Thirteen hours door to door on a packaged trip is normal, and a self-assembled version is rarely shorter.
  • Same-day return by air: comfortable, and the reason the seaplane products exist at all.
  • If you want an unhurried Victoria: stay a night. The transit cost is identical whether you spend three hours in the city or thirty.
